The “Queen of the Dolomites”, esconced at an altitude of 1224 m asl in a wide valley between the Tofane, Cristallo and Sorapis massifs, famed for hosting the 1956 Winter Olympics, is still the venue for important sport events. This is the place champions and VIPs call home. Don’t miss the prestigious shop windows along Corso Italia and a few visits to infashion entertainment spots. Downhill skiing reigns on the 140 km of slopes part of the Dolomiti Superski circuit.
The Ampezzo basin offers cross-country skiers about 70 km of tracks, all of which signboarded, and the Fiames, Sport Nordic Center, the starting point of the Cortina/Dobbiaco route and several beaten itineraries within the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo Nature Reserve, with 7 km of rings served by artifi cial snow systems and 2 by night lighting. There are two ski schools, one material testing centre and various ski rental and waxing outlets, etc. The skibus runs to and from downtown. The careful management is in the hands of GIS, the company that also runs the Olympic Stadium and the run Olympic from Bob ”E. Monti“.
