Cross-Country Ski Vacation in the Dolomites? How to plan it best!

Between snow-covered forests, wide valleys and majestic peaks: the Dolomites are a paradise for all who wish to experience winter consciously and authentically.

A cross-country skiing holiday in the Dolomites is more than just movement – it’s a journey within yourself, through nature, silence and vast open spaces. Here you’ll find the best tips to plan it smoothly.

1. Choosing the right region

From the quiet valleys of East Tyrol to the sunny Seiser Alm plateau – the Dolomiti NordicSki network includes eight unique regions. Each has its own character: sporty in the 3 Zinnen Dolomites, relaxing in the Gsiesertal / Val Casies, traditional in the Comelico, elegant in Cortina d’Ampezzo, authentic in the Ahrntal / Valle Aurina, culturally rich in Val Gardena, wide and panoramic on the Seiser Alm, and cross-border in East Tyrol. Decide whether you prefer high-altitude trails with panoramic views or quiet routes through the valleys.

2. Preparing your pass and equipment

With the Dolomiti NordicSki Loipenpass you have access to over 900 kilometres of perfectly groomed trails. You can buy it on site or also online. Equipment rental and service points are available in all partner regions – ideal if you’re travelling without your own gear. Choose the right clothing: breathable, warm and weatherproof.

3. Arrival and mobility

Travel sustainably: many trail starting points are easily reachable by bus or train. Within each region, ski buses connect trails, towns and accommodations. You can conveniently arrive via Innsbruck, Bruneck or Lienz – all well connected to the Dolomite valleys.

4. Accommodation and culinary moments

Our DNS partner accommodations are located right on the trails and stand for quality, authenticity and heartfelt hospitality. After a day in the snow, local delicacies await: dumplings, polenta, mountain cheese and – of course – a glass of South Tyrolean wine. That’s what winter tastes like.

5. Training and relaxation in harmony

Cross-country skiing is gentle on the joints and strengthens both body and mind. Make sure to plan enough time for movement and relaxation: sauna, walks, yoga, or simply taking in the snowy scenery. This is the secret of the “silent sport” – breathing consciously, living mindfully.

6. Bonus tip: Events and inspiration

Whether it’s the Dolomitenlauf in East Tyrol, the Gsieser Knödelmarathon or the Moonlight Classic on the Seiser Alm – the Dolomites host spectacular cross-country events every year. Check the event calendar to plan your trip around an unforgettable experience.

Last but not least

Cross-country skiing in the Dolomites is an invitation to rediscover winter: with calm, movement, and open eyes for what truly matters. Those who plan well will find not only perfect trails, but also a lasting sense of freedom.
